Sounds like you are describing a 'mansard roof':
http://architecture.about.com/library/blgloss-mansard.htm
A mansard roof is probably the hardest of any type of roof to frame and is not at all a beginner DIY roof framing project.
If you insist on tackling a mansard roof frame, buy a few books that illustrate advanced roof framing techniques.
Few professional framers encounter mansard roofs and few professional framers would even be able to describe to you how to frame them...

i checked out that site you had in your reply, the the roof i'm talkin about has an opening where glass or lexan would go ,all the way around vertically in between the 1st and 2nd tier just like you see on the pre fab gazebo's . i want to build mine from the ground up and add some custom looks to it . i'm looking for the formulas or what even i need to figure the cuts out . once i get the info i can decide how i want the pitches and the length of the windows between the 1st and 2nd tier. thanks for the help in advance.
