I have 8 recessed lights in a room with three dimmer switches. Two dimmer switches control two lights each and a third dimmer controls 4 lights (all 3 are Lightolier Slide Dimmer Switches). The bank of 4 lights are frequently flickering...to a point wher they are browining down so much we need additional light in the room. The dimmer switch is at the maximum level. The flickering does not have any corrolation with any other appliance or other electrical events in the house. What could the problem be?

I'd probably replace the dimmer. Or as an experiment, just swap it with one of your other dimmers.

If the dimmers share a box, did you derate the dimmers as required by the instructions which came with the dimmers?

Could you more precisely define "flicker"?

I don't know what you mean by derating. These dimmer switches existed when I moved into the house so I do not know if they were derated.

By flickering I mean that for most of the time they are on the ligthts will burn consistently. Once in a while, but often, the lights will dim (sometimes to a brown out condition) for a few seconds and then go back to their normal brightness. Soon again they would dim again. This could go on for an entire evening, or maybe not at all.

I may look to swaping the dimmers and see what happens. Any other imput is appreciated.

Thanks

So are all three dimmers in the same box?

Yes they are

Heat is always a problem with dimmers. Whereas one dimmer might be rated to control 300 watts if in a box by itself, three such dimmers in the same box might only be rated to control 150 watts each. You need to consult the manufacturer's information to figure out exactly what the numbers are for your dimmers.

Let us know what happens when you swap the dimmers.
