I have an older 1920's home, I just removed a ceiling fan/light unit controlled by a single wall switch. In the ceiling box, there are 4 cloth stlye wires. One pair of wires is twisted together and this was connected to the black wire of the fan. One cloth wire was connected to the white, and one was connected to the blue.
How do I connect a simple light with just black and white connections?
Do I keep the twisted pair together and connect this to the black, and then twist the remaining two together and connect them to the white. OR do I connect the previous white to white and cap off the wire formerly connected to the blue one?
Thanks!

Depends.
How was the fan/light controlled? Is there one switch on the wall? Did it control just the light and the fan was controlled by the pull chain? Or are there two switches on the wall, one for the fan and one for the light?
Actually, it probably doesn't make any difference what the answers to the above are. For the two wires in the ceiling that were connected to the black from the fan, just leave them connected to each other, but don't connect them to your light. Connect the black from your light to the ceiling wire that was connected to the blue from the fan. Connect the white from your new light to the wire that was connected to the white from the fan.

i terminated the old cloth romex in a junction box and replaced it with regular romex and connected as you suggested. Works great.
