Need some advice please. wife wants me to repaint coffee table. I was going to just take it apart, use some 120 grit sand paper and sand the old paint off and repaint it (there could also be a thin coat of varnish but i dont think so). Is this the right thing to do? or am i going to mess it up? thanks in advance.

That should work just fine if you......
- don't get paint on any surfaces you plan to glue
- tack it off after you sand
- give it a coat of sealer/primer before you paint
- after the sealer/primer dries, sand again with a 220 grit, tack it again, then paint.
