I have two gas log fireplaces and both may have bad valves. They'll start with a tap from a screw driver handle. I believe the springs that open the valve are weak. Can I replace the springs without buying new valves at $325.00 each? If it's not the springs what could it be? A weak thermopile perhaps - not generating enough millivolts to move the valve?

Hello: Stevnan

Very possible the pilot generator(s) (PG's) are weak and not generating enough milivolts. Replacing them is likely to solve the problem. The PG's have the two wires attached to them. The wires are connected to the gas valves.

First attempt to fix the problem would be to replace one of the PG's and note the results. Likely to correct the problem. The gas valves (controls) are not repairable nor rebuildable items. Any attempts to do so will create many more problems and unsafe conditions.

:) Sharp Advice,
The solution to the problem - FREE - was to clean the pilot light orifices in both fireplaces. I had pilot lights but they were weak. Full strength meant full power to the thermopiles and plenty of voltage to operate the fireplaces from the wall switches.
Advice on these gas log systems was to leave the pilot lights on year round. I think I'll run them only in winter. It may help keep the orifices cleaner.
