Have recently purchased house with Trane XV 80 Variable Speed High Efficency furnace. Trane dealer(who installed 6-7 years ago) said at first- insulate main duct through unheated attic and cold air return in crawl space- He didn't want to do it but I had it done.
Furnace runs on "low fire" for maybe 10 minutes and blower speed is low. When it "ramps up" and goes to high, it runs for a minute and shuts off?
He now says it should have a "Two Stage" thermostat? I asked why it wasn't put in when furnace was installed and he stated the previous owner didn't want any extra money spent "Only replace the furnace". Wants $225.00 to install (5 conductor wire is in place). Blue wire is not used now. Is this the problem and is price legit? I went to the owner's office but he avoids me. Asked to see him for 5 minutes (Secretary said he's paying bills) (TOO BUSY!)
Thanks guys,

if i am too busy for my customers, i would not be suprised that they went elsewhere for service
why not install it your self? we can tell you how.
225 not really out of line
service charge to come out
100 or so (not sure) for the tstat...plus markup
1/2 hr labor
i would charge close to that myself.
is the tstat satisfying when it cuts off?
many of those are run so that first stage comes in X number of minutes, then if not satisfied, 2nd kicks in until tstat is satisfied

Yeah, too busy to talk to me. If I got that close to Geo. Bush, I could get 5 minutes. (Door cracked open to his office...I could see him). They did service to the furnace yesterday $69.50 to check it out. Replaced the ignitor under warranty. No clean, no lube, no filter clean. Just a bill. HVAC$U (sorry HVAC4U). Being in Atlanta you might be able to charge that for a service call. Not here in the Poorest county in PA and one of the most poverty stricken in the USA. I feel like he should have had the thermostat on the truck and not charge for another service call. He's about a mile away. I think I can fix it. need to hook up the blue wire and remove a jumper, I think? All help and sugestions are appreciated. I'm not a "gas" guy. Fooled with Oil heat a little.
Reminds me of the guy skydiving who's parachute wouldn't open as he hurtled toward earth. Another guy came flying up and passed him. Skydiver yells, "Hey buddy, waddya know about parachutes?!!". The other going up, still gaining altitude, answers, " Nothing! Waddya know about gas furnaces?!!" I prefer to be safe.
regards & thanks,
Ol' Guzda :p

Service men think it should run longer. It runs on low fire for 10 minutes, when it kicks to high, it shuts off too soon. (according to them) They think a/o the single stage thermostat? Fell free to help! Tell me how to do it,please>
