I have my first home and it has this hideous black iron insert that juts out onto a brick hearth. I know it needs to be cleaned as it wasn't used last year (so say the sellers) but it's full of ash and black soot. The home inspector couldn't see into it, as something was blocking it.
Can I remove this butt-ugly :eek: wrought iron thing and just use the fireplace as decorative? Or should I replace it with a new, nice insert? I appreciate all comments as i am doing all my remodeling myself.
