I have a 16 year old home that I want to remove the old tile and replace with a new tile floor. The original tile is starting to crack and break in places. some of the tiles have been replaced, but I do not have any more extra pieces. I realize this is a big job. Any suggestions on removal and getting the old mastic up from the plywood on which it was installed. I have about 350 square feet of tile area.

scrape, chip and grind!
If you don't do something to stiffen that subfloor, your new tile will soon crack too. CBU tile board adds no structural strength to the subfloor. So another layer of plywood to bring the subfloor up to the required 1¼" thickness with a deflection rating of L/360 or higher, is needed before the CBU tile board gets installed(with thinset)
