I am looking at converting an old barn into a house and was wondering if anyone out there can give me some ideas on how to get started. Codes/zoning, Plans, Septic, Digging a basement. The barn is structurally sound, but will need to have some exterior pannel replaced, a new tin roof, and 1 or more interior floors added.

The building permit office will be the first stop. Codes will cover many of these items and drive others. Getting to know an engineer might be a good idea. A quick call to your insurance company might be in order as well. You never know what might be in store there. Zoning may be a concern. If you are thinking about financing for this project, the bankers may have some direction.

Hope this helps.

This is going to be a major project since you'll essentially be building a new house inside an old structure. If I were you, I'd be talking with architects and contractors to find out exactly what will be involved and what it may cost.

Don't be surprised if it's way more expensive than you thought.
