Swamp cooler was working fine strong cool air flow. Swamp is on roof. Then it made some clanking noise and the air flow is still cool but not strong at all.
I checked the belt and motor the motor works the belt spins. I tightened the belt but the noise is still there and the air flow is week. It appears that the wheel with the belt spins a lot faster than the vent. The vent looks a little loose/shaky when it spins. Do I just add oil? Or do I need to tighten the vent to the wheel with the the belt?

Hello: Old Home

Chances are the pulley(s) are loose on the shaft(s) They are secured using set screws, which need allen head wrenches to tighten or loosen them. Best bet might be to remove the belt, remove the pulleys, clean the shafts and inside of the pulleys, reinstall them and tighten them back down.

I do not suggest oiling these pulleys at any time. Cleaning the shafts with steel wool or fine grit sand paper is all that should be done. Oiling may cause them to slip on easier but may not fix them as they current are. Only the above will resolve the problem with the loose pulleys.

Another place to check is the blowers end bearings. Most have oiling caps which must be lifted up to add some oil. Any type of motor oil will work fine. Providing these end bearings are not excessively wornout.

If the blowers end bearings are worn out, they will need to be replaced. In that case you might find them in a locally and privately owner hardware store or big box large chain retailers like Lowes or Home Depot, etc.

Yet another possiblity may be the motors end bearings. If the shaft wobbles the bearings in the motor are worn out. Motor replacement is then about the only cost effective method to solve that problem.

I bought 2 spider brackets and replaced one, but the side of the belt with the wheel. I could not replace the spider bracket due to the wheel. I rented two wheel pullers and could not get that wheel off, I used a hammer and wd-40 still could not remove the wheel. Finally I put everything back together and it is working good.
Thanks for the help.

You dont say how old it is. Id say you will have to put that other new bearing in for sure. dont try and make the belt to tight. If the outside of the unit is good you can get a whole new blower for it . This would be the way to go check out blowers at www.grainger.com
