A little history - I had a TRANE XV1500 heatpump and it dies an ugly death. This system was a variable speed system with associated air handler and control system. I also believe it was a multi-zone unit (sensors throughout the house). It has been replaced by a TRANE XL14i unit but the new unit is not installed yet because the technician said the wiring was ll wrong on the new unit and he needed to rewire the system. In the process he said the control system / box was bad and had to be replaced at a cost of $2500.
My problem - Am I getting screwed in this situation? Also, is the XL14i a variable speed system, if not will my air handler still work or will that become another surprise? I am perplexed here and I think this guy doesn't know what he is doing. If I do need a new control system will I be able to get it for less?

PLEASE HELP!!
