I am trying to decide how to prepare my subsurface for ceramic tile. The floor is concrete with some hairline cracks, but the big problems are that the concrete is not really level and that there is a 3 inch PVC cleanout in the middle of the floor. The cleanout sticks up over the concrete about 1/4 inch and I would like to tile over it. I do not know whether to use a leveling compound or if I should put down some 1/4 inch plywood to bring the floor up to the height of the cleanout. Any thoughts??

Well...you're not going to like this, but you shouldn't be tiling over a clean-out, unless it's abandoned. If your draining system ever had problems you'd need the clean-out to clear your system.
I have a similar problem though, and I'm probably going to use self leveling compound to level the floor.
