I have a clematis too. I read the other question and answer. I am trying to grow mine around an arch way should i cut mine back too?

Let me just say this, when I cut mine back it gets over 10 to 12 feet tall. If I don't cut it back, I get a lot of dead vines & a big ball of growth with less than 1/4 flowers.
Clematis seems like Red Raspberries the new canes/vines get all the flowers. Yes I would cut them back, & put a nice pile of compost on in the fall.

Some clematis require pruning, some do better without it. For example, the Jackmanii is not pruned. If you are trying to avoid maintenance, having one that requires none is good. Otherwise, prune and mulch.

Some clematis will bloom only on new growth, so cutting those back is ok.
Other clematis will only bloom on old growth - ie) this years growth will have blooms next year.
