I have a gas fireplace on the second floor of my house that I almost never use. When I was moving around some furniture last night, I noticed that the pilot light was producing a considerable amount of heat by itself. Being that its 95 degrees out and I am blasing the AC in my house, I want to shut it off. How do I turn the gas off so the pilot doesn't burn at all? Is there some valve that I can just shut off, or is more complicated than that?

Hello; tim_R

Decorative fireplaces have a lower access panel which can be removed. Once that is removed, there will be a gas control valve with a red knob. (Usually the knobs are red but not in all cases.)

On the knob there will be three (3) positions. ON - PILOT - OFF. Turn the knob to the OFF position. You're likely going to have to slightly depress the knob to turn it off fully. The knob will stop in the pilot position. Depressing the knob slightly will allow the off position to be reached while turning.
