Hello,
I recently had a local a/c rep come out and provide diagnosis for my a/c not working. They stated my fan motor and contactor is bad. Is it possible for me to replace myself? I read through some threads and it looks like a good idea to replace the capacitor as well.
Not sure of a good place to buy here if i don't just go ahead and go through the company that gave the diagnosis...but they're quoting ~$400 to replace and not sure if it's a good price. My unit is a TRANE back in 1992 and I think he has the model# listed as TWN030 C/00A0.
Can someone provide some advice?
Any help is much appreciated!

Look in the yellow pages there under HVAC supplies or Electric Motors. Just take the old with you so they can match it up.

Hmm, HVAC wasn't listed although I found some A/C Supplier listings whom i'll call. The original company called back with a quote for ~270 installed with a new capacitor as well...that's much less than I expected. It's freaking hot and don't want to wait so i hope i'm not getting a raw deal. Thanks for the help.

That's not that bad a price for a motor, capacitor and contactor installed.

Hey fellas,
so the motor and contactor was replaced as well as the capacitor.
Original unit states the motor is 1/6 HP, 0.9amp, 820RPM and a 5uF cap.
It was replaced by 1/6HP, 1.1amp, 825RPM unit and a 5uF cap.
The unit still didn't turn on when he put that white breaker thing back in. He then traced around and said the relay on the defrost circuit board is dead and eventually bypassed it so it "works" but stated i should change that circuit board out by winter. Does all this make sense? Anyhow, that was all done about 3:00pm earlier today and the temp read ~98degrees. I just got home ~20min ago. the house is still 94 freaking degrees. I called the guy and he said it should take all night for it to cool down the house b/c it needed to take out the humidity?...and that if there were still problems to call tomorrow and that it would probably something else that is wrong besides the bad circuit board. Advice anyone?
Should i just call someone else?
Please help.
Thanks.

Yes, it will take a while for the house to cool down but I would have expected it to be less than 94. Give it overnight and see what happens. As for the ciruit board, that is a very important part of the heat pump's operation and needs to functioning properly so you will have to have it replaced. I hope that the original guy didn't jump to concluding bad motor when maybe the problem was the board was keeping power from getting to the motor.

Well i left the house this morning and thermo readout is 91 degrees, so i don't think it's working. i called him out and going to meet with him again. he says it maybe low on freon or my evap something is clogged. i kept all the old stuff. i guess we'll see what he says. thanks for the advice...

Letsee...Just got back and it turns out my 'aux' lite was coming on while the a/c came on. So apparently the heater strips were coming on and mixing heat with cold for the hot air. He bypassed the thermo so the aux lite wouldn't come on (removed a white wire) but the heat was still there. Opened the evap unit and contactor was actuated for the heater stuff. He removed two wires to the circuit board and says there must be a short in there. So now the a/c works but no heat and bypasses outside and inside. he recommends not to put anymore money into it and that i should buy a whole new unit. man-oman i don't have the money for that right now though. Oh he also filled my unit from 60lb freon to ~75lb and stuck an ozone sticker or something on the unit. I believe myself to by solder savvy and could probably change out the bad relay on the defrost circuit board and maybe fix whatever's wrong with the other circuit board. any ideas or should i just

It's getting out of hand. I can see bypassing the board outside to get you going but he's not doing a thorough job of checking everything before he leaves. Also, he should have stayed and tracked down the problem with the heat strips. Any chance you replaced the thermostat somewhere along the line? You can get generic defrost boards that have the same functions as the one in your unit and they are not that expensive. If you buy it as a Trane part it will be $$$. As for the indoor board, I would have to see the wiring diagram in order to tell you what to check there. I find it hard to believe that all these problems cropped up at once. If you can scan the wiring diagram and make it readable like maybe at a website or as an e-mail attachment send me a private msg here and I'll see what I can do.
