Hi folks,

I was wondering what the minimum temp an A/C can be set to.

We have a programmable thermostat that is set to 24°C while we are at work during the day. In the evening it drops to 22°C and at night it is set to go down to 18°C for cooler sleeping. (9:00pm it goes to 18°C and at 3:am it is set to rise to 24°C again) On nights that are cooler it only has to cut in for an hour or so, if it cuts in at all.

Is this too low? It hasn’t given us any problems but we were involved in a conversation this weekend where everyone thought that was too low. One friend had even been told by their contractor never to set below 22°C as it might freeze up.

We have never experienced any ice build up on ours and were wondering if maybe it was just the type of A/C they had. Daytime temps have been around 25-32°C lately and nighttime 16-20°C.

Just wondering…

Wow you sure like it cold at night. 18ºC = 64.4ºF. Setting it that low if the outdoor temps are low enough could possibly cause liquid refrigerant to get back to the compressor. If your going to run it like that when it's cool outside you may want to consider installing a head pressure control to shut down the condensor fan if the pressures get low enough.
