can anyone tell me if type s mortar is sanded or does it have to say "sanded" on the bag?

There is Type "S" Masonry Cement. This would just be just the Cement, Sand would be added. This would weight about 80Lbs.
Then there is Type "S" Mortar Mix this would have sand mixed with it. The Mortar Mix would be in smaller Bags about 60lbs or so.

I believe they also sell Type N and Type S mortar mixes (just add water).
Mortar cement (type N and S) require sand and water, but Mortar Mix just requires water.

Yes there is a Type N Masonry Cement\Mortar mix. I would high recommend Type S over N though. It is a higher grade material. Will cure harder and resist the elements better. Such as moisture.
