Dear Experts,

I have a York furnace (2nd floor unit) from about the mid-1990's that functions as a fan/blower for the outside A/C unit. (It has a Packard blower.) Recently, when the A/C would cycle off, the indoor unit would squeal loudly. Now, when the A/C cycles on, the indoor unit just hums. Switching it to Fan and off Auto did not make any difference. The outdoor unit sounds like it is running normally.

I read through other messages, and have attempted to remove the fan/blower/motor. When I pull the front panel off, there is a cylindrical device mounted in the middle with fan blades. I unscrewed the mount, but the device will only pull out between .5" and 1". I do not see any additional screws or any type of release button. Am I trying to remove the correct item? Is there a trick to this that I am missing?

Also, if I am ever able to remove it, do you have any tips on how best to clean and oil to see if that will help? Or should I just take it to a shop?

Thanks so much,
Keryx

Look around there at the blower you have to pull the whole blower out of there to work on it.

It all has to come out then you can get to the motor.

Hey ED,

The blower seems to be free from everything that I am able to observe. It's like there is a catch in between it and the furnace wall. Online pics of blowers look like there is a rod coming out of it...could that be stuck?

Thanks

Rod?????? That whole blower houseing has to come out. motor fan wheel and houseing as one piece. on some it slides out some two screws and it drops down and out???? You have to look at what you have there to take it out to work on the motor.

But that is the immediate problem...it will not come out despite the fact that I have removed all three of the screws from the mounting hardware.

It sounds like you are trying to pull the blower motor out the side of the housing without taking the housing out of the furnace 1st. The big metal housing should have just a couple screws in the front of it that you remove then the housing will slide out. After you get that out then loosen the setscrew from the blower wheel and work the motor out.

Lost here I think. Now if you have it all out there.look on the end you say a rod???? On that hub inside the blower wheel should be allen screws, take them out and the motor should slid out off that wheel for you. With its mounting.
