my carrier central air unit keeps the downstairs very cool but the upstairs remains warm. I have tried different configurations of opening and closing vents but no help.
How can I get better cooling upstairs?

You can try running the a/c fan in the on position as apposed to auto. That will keep the indoor fan on 24/7 and sometimes helps to even out the temps on upper floors. Do you have any return vents up there?

Have you tried to close all the down registers just a little bit. Then let it run 24/7 like Matt said
