The 26 Gauge sheet metal should hold it. Id have to ask can you raise the furnace some so they can make a plenum box to fit from the coil box to the furnace say 8 "or 10" high that would sure help here.

I wouldn't touch it. Call and have the owner come and look at it. The guy sounds inexperienced.

I agree that if the job doesn't hold up, it should be repaired by the original contractor for free. I thought that everybody would stand by their work for at least 30 days.

What I have had to do in the past to strengthen a syanding unit was to screw slotted angle vertically to the 4 corners and use them as legs. One way or another you have to get that weight supported properly.
