I have a 1980 built home with a gas furnace located behind an access door in the hallway. There is a wall switch located next to that door, in the hallway, that controls the electric to the furnance blower. My question is, what is it's purpose? Iv'e been in newer homes with electric furnaces (heat pumps here in Florida) that are located in the garage and don't have any seperate wall switch, just the curcit breaker. Is this something required because it's a gas furnace or located in the interior of the home?
I'd like to remove the wall switch and use the space to control another closet light.

If you mean it just turns on the blower is all then its a add on. if it will turn the power off to the gas furnace it could be code. Down here Id call and check with code . For sure if it turns all the power off to the furnace. If it just turns the blower off and on Go for it.

Around here you have to have the switch. Check local code.
