Because of insufficient cooling, the service tecnician was called to check over the split central a/c system. When he first installed his gages, the suction side was reading 69 psi and the high pressure side was reading 210 psi. The suction service fitting was just slightly cool, not cold and wet. The technician thouroughly checked the entire system and could not find any negative issues. He then added R-22 until the suction side stabilized at 83 psi and I could not see the high side pressure reading. At this point the suction line fitting became very cold and wet and the system is cooling now like it is brand new. The technician did not perform a superheat calculation because he said it wasn't necessary on 'these old units'. Doesn't the suction line pressure seem awfully high or could this be considered normal?

If the indoor temp of the house was warm enough that suction may be ok but you will not know since he didn't charge it properly because he probably didn't know how. He did what was called "beer can cold method". This is where the tech gets the suction line beer can cold and decides that's good enough. If you want it done right then call the service company and request it. They will probably do it or they may tell you to take a hike.
