Hi everyone,

I am totally clueless about this, so I apologize in advance for sounding foolish!

I just got a window a/c. Sounds simple, right? Well, my apt. has the metal sleeves in the wall to accomodate thru wall a/c's, and I didn't realize until just now that there are a/c's specifically for thru-wall units. Even if I had known they existed, they simply cost too much!

So the question is, is it possible, and is it safe, to install a window a/c in the wall sleeve? It seems to be on a backwards slant and there are drainage holes on the bottom of the back of the sleeve. There is also a lip (approx. 1/2 inch) that the front of the a/c will rest on, allowing the back to be lower to accomodate drainage. What do you think? Can I keep my a/c? Any tips on installing?

Thanks so much!

Yes and no. It will slide in there ok and drain. But, But. its the air for the unit. You cant block any of the air intakes there on the side of your new unit. Are like make the fan pull air in from another grill and the grill on the new unit. If you mean just a sleeves in the wall and the side grills on the new unit will be out there in the air alone I dont see why not.

Thanks Ed!

The sleeve has vents on the entire back, but no vents on the sides. The a/c will have about 4.5 inches on each side when it is inside the sleeve - is that enough, do you think? What could happen if there isn't enough air circulating?

Id say no That window AC need all the air it can get in the side vents it has. I dont think it will work in there.
