My fireplace has a small metal vent/ash removal? thing on the bottom towards the rear that pivots open. Should this be open or closed while burning wood? We are4having some smoke issues and trying to figure it out. My second question is about broken glass media in the bottom of the fireplace with flames coming through here and there randomly. Is this something that is available to purchase somewhere or was it a custom idea that we saw in another home we looked at? I have seen this same idea done with sand. Any Help would be great! :)

That is whats called a ash dump. But where does it go???
Is there a clean out in the basement or if the back of the fireplace is outside the put a clean out door out theresome times.
Now no it should be closed till you clean the fire place out.

Now have you tried when you open a window it dont smoke. The fireplace needs air to go up the flue. Do you have any vent fans in the home, this can draw the smoke in to the home? Get the flue hot with some paper on fire first then light the fire helps. sometimes

My second question is about broken glass media in the bottom of the fireplace with flames coming through here and there randomly I dont know at all what you mean here sorry.
