Hello,
Is it OK to tile new 1' self adhesive vinyl tiles over existing 1' vinyl tiles or do you recommend removal of existintiles? The existing tiles are in solid condition and I'm told you can install the self adhesive 1' square tiles right over it.
Any tips or experiences are greatly appreciated.

You can go over the existing. If you've seen some of my other posts about these tiles with "complimentary" adhesive :p , you know what a fan I am NOT of the glue supplied, I always use floor adhesive on them, I've never had one come up yet. (not that I've layed 1000's of them, but in my limited experience, the extra glue is the way to go)

The existing vinyl tiles have a pattern on them - meaning they are not smooth. Are you recommending that I use some sort of a adhesive to "level out" the surface and them apply "non stick" vinyl tiles?
If so, what type of adhesive or mastic should I use and will this substance level out the surface and stick to the new tiles?
Thanks for your advise...much apprecated.

didnt know about the "pattern"
so first off....how deep is the pattern on the old tiles?...high point to low point.
There are several options depending on this, so, even though it will take another day, I'll wait for your reply before going any further.
I've always used the adhesive with the "self sticking" tile just because those are the ones that are easily found around here.
If you are going to use adhesive no matter what, if you'd like to make a run to the depot(I love that store :D ), the adhesive you will want for vinyl is called(as you might expect) vinyl flooring adhesive...or sheet flooring adhesive.

Pattern (flower) is perhaps no more than 1/8" deep at worst. There is surface for a self stick to the surface, but since the pattern is set deeper into the tile, the self stick tile will obviously hit 100% of the surface. My fear is down the road the tile may loosen or even crack since there will be spots on the tile with no hard surface underneath (due to pattern).
My buddy recommended cleaning the existin tile, applying the mastic to allow for adhesion and establish a level surface by filling in gaps from the pattern and then using a non stick vinyl tile set into the mastic.
Thanks again...

For 1/8" I probably would just use the sheet flooring adhesive and let it fill in the spaces, but that's me.
You have some choices. Do as above...or...apply mastic/leveling compound, then adhesive and flooring.
If you use JUST the self-stick adhesive, the tiles may crack into the spaces depending on how wide they are(the spaces), but with the liquid adhesive below, they should be supported by that.
Another option, depending on how worried you are abut cracking, etc: You could add 1/4" plywood to the floor, then tile on top of that, the 1/4" plywood definately won't crack into the spaces.
hope this helps, post back anything else you need.
