i'm putting in slate tiles in a 6x6 mudroom. the floor previously had t&g flooring, which i've torn up. the subfloor is currently 1x6 planks set close together. is there something else i should do to the floor before setting the slate? should i nail a sheet of plywood down first (if so, what thickness?) i don't imagine i need cement board. but i get the feeling i need something.
any help is appreciated.

yes ,you do.Put down a layer of 1/2 c.d.x. plywood and screw it every 2 inches on the seams and every 4 to 6 inches in the field. Then get you a good latex modified thinset that you can use over plywood, they are not all the same so make sure you can go over plywood with what you buy.Oh,and when putting the plywood down leave an1/8 gap to allow for expansion.
Laticret makes a good one and so mapei,i don't know what you have available in you're area maybe all maybe none check with you're local flooring supplier and see what they have
