I'm replacing carpeted stairs with oak but I'm stuck on the side boards. They are already stained dark and appear irreplacable as they butt against the side stringers. Would it look odd to have medium oak finished treads and risers with slightly darker dark oak side panels?

Sometimes personal preferences look odd. If it looks fine to you, everyone else will go along with it.
