I'm in the process of installing a toilet in my basement. The plumbing has been roughed in and I need some assistance.
Should I install the finished floor and then have the flange on top of the tile?
I've heard it should be installed before the tile job not sure, which is the right way.
My thinking would be to install it after the floor has been finished. Given that to secure the flange I need to drill through the tile. Would I have to drill all the way down to the concrete floor and attached it there or is attaching it to the tile OK. What types of screws would I need to do this?
On another note I went to my local hardware store and noticed that there is a wide selection of flanges. Not sure which one to buy for my situation. I'm installing a TOTO 1.6 toilet (Ultimate)
any help suggestions would really help me out
thanks
excellent forum!!!!!

Dave,
1. Yes, install the tile first. The flange is supposed to be flush on top of the finished floor with only the thickness of the flange above finished floor level.
2. Use an awl or other sharp pointed tool for a starter point on the tile to keep the masonry drill bit from walking. Drill through the tile into the concrete. You can use lead anchors and screws or just Tapcon screws. Check at the plumbing supply store.
3. The type of flange that you need depends on the type of pipe that you're attaching it to...PVC white plastic, ABS black plastic, etc. (Use the proper glue made for that type of plastic (and primer with PVC).
Set the flange so that the toilet base bolts will be at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock when seated fully in the end of the slots (not where the bolt heads go through it).
Good Luck!
