The Freezer compartment is fine :) , but the frige is not cold at all. The unit was working fine and simply stopped cooling. Tried adjusting the controls and nothing happened. Could this be a thermostat problem? Is this a DIY fix or should a pro be called in? The unit isn't even three years old!

Thanks in advance,
Maria

Hello Maria and Welcome to the Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

By now, several days after your post, you're likely to have had to get a pro.

Most likely was not a diy problem.

I have purchased five new Maytag frost free top freezer refrigerators in the last six years. Two of the five refrigerators have had a failure of the evaporator fan motor (freezer fan). The symptom in both cases was identical to what you describe above.

I kept the most recent failed fan motor. The manufacturer and part number is: Panasonic P/N UDQR002MB. I am not sure if the first failed fan motor was the same part number, but it looked physically similar.

Thank you for the reply Iceberg. I had to call Maytag for service, the problem with unit was a faulty relay on a circuit board for the defrost controller, too much ice build up. I’ll keep the fan in mind; I had one in an older freezer unit that also burned out. That would have been cheap and simple, this wasn’t.

Thanks for the help,
Maria

Maria,

Sorry that you had to go the expensive route to fix your refrigerator. I think Maytag did a disservice to DIYers by going to the adaptive defrost controller in lieu of the electro-mechanical defrost controller. A refrigerator with a electro-mechanical defrost controller is a lot easier to troubleshoot.
