1) What is the best way to end crown moulding when I come to a stopping place? Have the moulding turn 90 degrees and end in the wall? _______]

2) What height should I make the crown moulding for a 9 1/2 foot ceiling?

3) And finally, anyone have any great pics/designs for a nice build-up crown moulding?

Many thanks in advance,
Steve

1. I would do a 90 degree return into the wall, Cut a 90 short of the end of
the wall and then cut a short facing 90 into the wall.

2, I would suggest always putting crown moulding at ceiling height.

3. Click on this link or copy and paste it into the address bar and press the
enter key.to see some ideas of different crown moulding build-ups.

Thanks Bill.
The site link was very helpful, as well as the moulding return. What I meant (but didn't explain very well), was how high (like 4" or 12" - probably too high) would be a suitable height for a room that has 9 1/2' walls. I read where if the moulding is too big, it makes the room look smaller.

I would probably stay around six inches total on a 9 1/2 foot ceiling height. One way is to use a stock 4 1/4" crown moulding from Home Depot or Lowes drop down a couple inches put up a small trim piece and then paint the crown moulding 2" wall area and small trim piece the same color. This gives the appearance of a much larger overall crown.
