Help. We have a cabin that has a stone fireplace with stone chimney(approx 13 ft tall). The fireplace has something called a heatelater in it that is probably ~60 years old. Its rusted out and and needs to have something done with it. My question is can we just pull this thing out of the fireplace and use the stone fireplace or does the fireplace have to have some sort of lining? If it needs to have a lining why? I've seen some wood burning fireplace that are just rock. The rocks are probably ~14 inch diameter with ~1/2-3/4 mortar between them. We burn wood in this fireplace for heat and ambiance.
Thanks,
Steve

I would say NO you cant pull it out and just burn in the fireplace. we use that steel heatelater a lot You set them and build the stone brick or what around them with a flue tile going on up. there is no fire brick around or in them anywhere..
Hope this helps.
