It gets cold here, and there's no room in the house for a freezer. The old one died after 20+ years of living in the shop. Heat there is intermittent at best. During the winter months it only warms up when you build a fire to work out there. I see that new freezers say they don't work in such conditions. Is that right? We never had problems before. What 20 cf+ refrigerator (not frost free) would be best for this situation, or does it really matter?

Most modern freezers don't work well in temperature extremes. Anything much below 50 degrees to much above 90 degrees F and they have trouble. You can blame it on computer assisted design and the desire to create cheaper appliances that are more energy efficient. The new compressors aren't very tough amd their condensers are just big enough to cool the freon under optimal conditions, a little too much dirt or heat and they are done. There is no room for error or unexpected circumstances. So to answer your question, almost all freezers and refriges these days won't survive the extreme conditions of an unheated or uncooled building for long. Sorry its not better news. Doc E

Drat. Mayhap I shall find an old one to rebuild. Hmm. How about commercial level equipment?

Maybe this will work. I found a Silver King 48" (free and it runs!) I guess the only way to find out is to put it out in the shop this winter and see if it works.
