I apologize, because I think I have seen this problem in past threads, but I just want to make sure.
I bought a house in December, it was built in the late 40's and has mostly galvanized piping (some has been replaced, but not the piping to my shower.)
Ever since we moved in, the hot water valve and diverter valve have become looser and looser. I mean that the knobs are actually wobbly. It now takes great concentration to get the hot water on/off and the diverter from tub/shower (very tricky to manipulate and getting worse everyday.)
Can I just replace the knobs or is my problem more extensive. I am contemplating replacing everything including the pipes all the way back to their origination point, but I need a quick fix soon too.

You can pop the center covers off the handles and then remove the screw that holds the handle on (make sure you don't turn the handles when unscrewing or you'll get wet). Pull the handle off and see if the inside of the handles are broken or the stems are stripped. If not then try wiggling the valve stems. (doubt they will move). You may have to replace the faucet and diverter valve. Good luck and post back.

It turns out the stems are stripped. I can still use them - sort of.
Is there a temporary fix available?
I'm sure I need to replace the faucet, either eventually or regrettably - this weekend.
Should I call in a plumber?

You may be able to get replacement parts at HD or Lowes. Would be a lot cheaper than total replacement. Get all the info you can off the unit or better yet, turn off the water supply and take the stems with you since I am not sure how stripped they are or if it's stripped the inside out. Good luck and post back.

Thanks for all of the help.
I was able to just replace the three stems. I bought the hot and cold at HD, but thought that the Price/Pfister diverter they had in stock wasn't compatable, so I went to a plumbing supply store, where the product (same one as HD's) cost me twice as much. When I told the guy how much cheaper the part was at HD, he told me that it was because HD's parts are made in China, and that they are crappy. When I arrived home, I found that the part he sold me, had 'Made in Taiwan' imprinted on the side. The point is that everything is made in China, or nearby. But...
HD's customer service is less than half as good as the local store though, so if you need advice, I guess paying the extra dough is okay.
Thanks Again!!
