I have installed pre-hung doors before, but never a door into a doorway that still must be framed. Do you know anywhere that would have good, detailed instructions to follow?

What is surrounding the doorway now? - Nothing?
Is it just walls on either side of the doorway and a header above the doorway?
Sounds like the doorway needs to be framed, to accomodate a pre-hung door....if thats what I summise is your situation.
Any more specifics may help

We have s specific door my wife wants to use in a partially completed building. The guy who used to live here put in an INTERIOR door that is hinged to standard 2x4 framing (double 2x4's). The door we want to use is considerably smaller than the one in there now. (Or partially in there, since the weather has destroyed the door and there is about a one foot high hole across the bottom of the existing door.).
In essence, I believe the difference in size is enough that I need to fram the door small with 2x4s and then put in the door jamb (1x4s ??) and then attach our door with hinges.

.
Sounds about right. Depending on the width of the existing opening, you will have to add framing to that opening to accomodate your new door. A 2x4 is 1.5" thick, so depending on how much you need to reduce the opening will depend on how much material you'll need to add to the old frame. You may only need 1-2x4 on 1 side a 1-1x4 on the other...or combinations there of...if you see what I mean.
Should be do-able.
Good luck..and let us know how it goes.
