Hi,
I want to build a shoe rack for the numerous pairs my girlfriend has and I did some thinking about it.
My plan is to build separate units. 1 per pair of shoes.
The will be wood, the size of a shoebox, and open on
the small side in stead of on top.
I have no good idea how to connect the different units though.
Anyone have any suggestions? I basically want to build it so that I can add or remove units whenever I want.
greets
Pete

Peter-
Kissing up to the girlfriend is a good plan but be careful about those with lots of shoes. I married one 33 yrs ago and have to defend my little section of our walk-in closet like a she grizzly with a new cub.
Having said that, now I'll offer my two cents worth about your plan.
I wouldn't try to build a separate 'box' for each pair of milady's shoes. You'll use up a lot of material and a lot of the closet space will be boxes instead of space for shoes. I would suggest a bookcase arrangement with adjustable shelving sized to hold several pairs on each shelf. The adjustable shelves can be spaced to hold everything from those fuzzy slippers she has up to the alligator cowboy boots she wears when she's out boot scooting. (If she isn't into that, drop her like a bad habit.)

I somewhat agree with this other guy about too many shoes... I would tell her (after you build the rack of your dreams) that once the rack is in place she can never own more shoes than are able to fit in the rack. To get a new pair she'll have to purge an old pair.
OK that said..
I would make a frame out of three-quarter stock with horizontal shelves made from half or five-eighths thick. In each of these shelves will be dato cuts that will hold quarter inch dividers. You can then remove these as often as necessary. I would even make the slots half the width that you desire so that you can move them to 1.5x of normal for "clod-hopper" type shoes. The three-quarter stock could have datos in it to locate the half inch shelves. to remove them as needed, too.
Just a thought!

Have you ever actually had that work?? If so, please drop me an email and tell me what kind of booze you drink, or what kind of vitamins you take. That certainly has never worked for me. :D
