I’m currently finishing my basement and need some help regarding the installation of a shower in the basement. The shower drain is already ruffed in. I don’t know what to do to finish the shower floor before the tiles are installed. I have all the framing done and have the shower value and tub filer installed. Waiting for drywall.

I understand that I have to install a rubber membrane on the shower floor and a cap on the shower drain. I’m not sure how to connect the rubber membrane and the shower drain together or simply finish the floor off prior to tiles. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I’m not sure if I can do this myself.

I'll try and get a picture but i don't have a digital camera.

Basically, the shower is ruffed in. The drain pipe (black ABS) comes up through the conceret floor and has a blue cap on it . I want to put tiles on the floor of the shower but not sure what needs to be done to complete the floor.

sorry I don't have a picture

Check out the materials on this site; go to Go Shopping on the browser above and look up shower drains, this will lead you to a bolted flange that has a threaded piece to raise or lower in conjunction with the finished height of floor.

Are you doing a custom tiled shower? Are you doing the tiling yourself? I am no expert, but am just getting into a similar job myself.

If you are not using a preformed shower pan (shower kit), then you need to make the shower pan yourself using mortar. The basic steps are:

- Install the bottom portion of a two piece shower drain.
- Use mortar to build a pre-slope
- Install a waterproof membrane on top of this
- Install cement board to the walls
- Attach the top part of the drain with the membrane clamped in it
- Put another layer of mortan on top of this
- Ready for tiling

There are several websites that have tutorials about this, such as johnbridge.com or do a google search for "mortar shower pan" or "custom shower pan" or something like that.
