I have a cape cod with 2 bathrooms. The first floor toilet runs like a champ. I had to replace the Fluidmaster once about six years ago, and I haven't had to since. But the upstairs toilet is a nightmare. I've had to have a plumber in 3 times in the same amount of time. Enough is enough.

Right now the symptom is this: The toilet takes forever to fill, and it's getting worse. At first, it was just taking a long time. Over the last few weeks, the water has slowed down to a trickle, and occasionally I hear a hissing sound, as if the water pressure increases for a moment, then it goes back to a trickle.

The Fluidmaster was just changed, oh, maybe 2 years ago -- by our plumber, who rebuilt the entire inside of the tank. I just refuse to accept that I did a better job replacing the thing than he did. That just doesn't make sense. :)

I would prefer to address this myself. Should I just change the Fluidmaster again or bring in the "heavy artillery"?

Replace the fill valve.
Another possiblity would be galvanized supply pipes. The only solution for them is replacement.
Good Luck!

Disconnect the supply line off the bottom of the fluidmaster . point it into a pail and turn the water on, if you have good strong water flow and it does not surge up and down, then install a new fluidmaster.
