I have an MTD lawnmower with a briggs engine, model 12F802-0610.

It starts right up, but I can not get it to run any faster than idle!

The governor never seems to allow it more gas.

Any ideas?

Some more information would be helpful, the model # you gave is your briggs engine, MTD model # will be of much more help.
You may look and make sure your Throttle cable and choke cable are actually moving the linkage at the carb.
