Last year we had a new roof put on and about 8 months later got water damage. We thought it was the flashing around the chimney but it now appears to be our chimney. We have efflorescence on the outside, if that's important. We just had a chimney sweep + inspection and he recommended a product called ChimneySaver. He said he would coat the entire chimney for $285. Should I go ahead and let him do this? It doesn't seem like anyone is sure what is causing the leak, but running water on the flashing didn't cause a leak, while real rain did (which would hit the flashing AND the chimney). Thanks for any help you can give.

It all in what you can do are pay for. Id say he is right in some ways. First is the cement cap good on the top of the flue. Would a metal flue cap help up there? Then yes you can seal all sides of the flue. What you have is the water comeing down in the brick and cement of the flue. its called hydrostatic pressure. It will look like the flashing is the one leaking sometimes.
