I have cabinets in my kitchen that are falling apart. The doors and face of them look fine, but the "box" of the cabinet is (was) constructed with staples and glue. Most of the wood appears to be particle board or pressed board. They appear to be the original cabinets in this '86 house.

Can these be repaired to the point they can be trusted to hold dishes, or is attempting to repair these a lost cause?

(I've Googled as best I can, but only found things for changing the hardware, or redoing the finish on the doors... essentially cosmetic work, whereas I need to deal with structural problems in these cabinets.)

Thank you for your time,

Eli

If the access you have to the boxes is from the outside, you can reinforce the particle board structure by drilling through the sides into the tops and bottoms and any fixed shelves and installing confirmat screws.

Hope this helps.

If you have the typical veneered particle board cabinet boxes, repairing them is problematic at best. You might get them to look OK, but I doubt if I would want to trust them to hold the good dishes.

Yeah, they're "typical veneered particle board cabinet boxes"... I think I'll pursue replacing them.

Thanks y'all.
