We recently tore down a floor to ceiling faux stone fireplace. We left an extended 6 inches of raised hearth so that we can build a new brick surround with our Stoll lintel frame. In building the new hearth, getting the hardibacker flat to the ground was okay. How do we attach a hardibacker to the front of the raised, jagged concrete ledge that was the old hearth in a vertical direction? What do we use? Mortar first for a flat, then thin set? Any kind of special mortar to build the brick surround? Thanks!
