my upstairs bathroom. There are no obvious leaks, just a terrible smell. I got some advice that I'm going to take about a freplacing a faulty toilet seal. Does anyone else think that this is most likely the culprit? Tthere must be alot of water coming from it (seeping into the flooring), if it smells this bad already. There is no noise coming from the toilet except when we flush, and there are no outward signs of leakage. How will I be able to tell if the seal replacement worked? Will the musty smell dissipate?

Yes, most likely the seal. Plunging toilets can cause this.
If it is the wax ring, then when you replace it, the smell should go away.
Follow up with us to let us know if you found floor damage when pulling the toilet.
The ring will be black where there was an air leak.

If there is floor damage what does that mean? Would it cause water to leak into the flooring, could it leak enough to affect the kitchen ceiling?

Before pulling the toilet to replace a wax ring seal, check for a blockage of the vent pipe on the roof above that bathroom.
Clean anything out (birdnest, leaves, debris, etc.) that you can reach by hand, and then flush the vent pipe down with a water hose sprayer.
If that doesn't solve the problem, snake the vent pipe down from top to bottom with a heavy-duty plumber's snake, and then flush it down with a water hose.
If that doesn't work, THEN replace the wax ring.

I'm at a total loss! I think there is water seeping into my kitchen ceiling. One part of the ceiling feels a little soft, but I don't know if that;s always been there, as I don't normally go around feeling ceilings. So would that vent pipe cause that type of back-up?
