Doors and Windows - Good vinyl replacement windows vs. Andersens

I have six windows that need replacement. I have already had Andersen tilt-wash windows put in upstairs. A contractor I am considering hiring, who comes highly recommended by someone I know, says that quality vinyl replacement windows will last just as long as new construction windows, and don't require the additional framing and trim work. I'd always heard that vinyl replacement windows are cheesy and bad quality, but he says you can get good ones. He says the difference in cost to me is about $125-$200 per window because of the labor.

The Tilt-Wash windows always make me nervous when I tilt them in to clean them; I'm always afraid I won't be able to get them back into the sashes. I know the replacement windows are easier to tilt in for cleaning. But I've also heard that they leak no matter how good they are.

So thats where I am. What's the straight story? Is it possible to get replacement windows that are just as good as new construction windows and have as much structural integrity when integrated into the house? And if so, what brands are recommended, and what in particular should the contractor do to ensure they don't leak?

Why not hire the same contractor that installed the windows upstairs do the others as well? This way they will be uniform in apperance. I dont have a problem with replacement windows, but I think they should eventually all be the same type of window. There are pros and cons to both types, if you're happy with the Andersens then continue with them.

Yes, they're more expensive, but you get what you pay for, and Andersen has a 20-year limited warranty vs. most windows with 10-year warranties.
Andersen stands behind that warranty the full 20. (I've seen it with a neighbor, and heard about it farom contractors.)
Andersens are guaranteed not to leak in 60 mph storms, but I saw a Bob Vila Andersen factory tour, and they actually make them to withstand 100 mph winds.
Mine have been through several near-100 mph storms (I live on the water near the East Coast), and they didn't leak.
I agree with samm. If you have already started with Andersens, I would do the rest with Andersens.
Just my opinion. Nothing wrong with good quality vinyl windows either, but Andersens are better.

I would hire the same contractor who did the windows in a minute if he would only get back to me with the estimate he measured for!!
