Hi there, does anyone know the method for aging mirror so it gets that intique look. I'm making mirrors and would like the look of antique mirror glass without the expense of the real thing.
Many thanks.

The Antiquing process is done when the mirror is silvered. Once the silver is coated with copper and painted, there is noting you can do.

I am working on that right now. I found a set of instructions on the internet. They say to apply paint remover to the back of the mirror, let it sit until the surface blisters and bubbles. Add a second coat of paint remover. Let sit until surface has softened. After it has softened gently rub with steel wool to remove protective layer, being sure to leave some of the original backing.

This did not work for me. I put on the paint remover and found I had to scrape off the first layer, which came off easily. Then I had to put on another layer of paint remover and scrape and use steel wool to get this off. Then I had to put on another layer of paint remover and this I rubbed with steel wool - all in one direction. It did finally take the silvering off, but am not sure it is quite the look I am after. It looks a little streaked right now and can't tell if I took too much off or not enough silver. Will check it again tomorrow.

The instructions on the internet say to wash the piece with soap and water and let dry, then sprinkle a metal patina (using gloves) onto the back. I just saw this, the metal patina will remove part of the metal backing. It says to work quickly and wash off quickly.

So will try this again. Using some of my original attempts and using the metal patina.

This is all I know so far. Any ideas?
