Last summer I installed laminate flooring in my kitchen and was provided with a site where they displayed a grid for the layment of the planks. i.e. 1st plank full lenght, 2nd plank 1/3 etc.. I am now doing another room and cannot seem to find those instructions. The manufacuturers site does not seem to be that detailed. Can anyone help.

End joints should be no less then 8-10 inches from each other(All manufacturers have a different spec.). What you cut off to end a row, is used to start the next row, if not, you will have a lot of waste, and run short on flooring.

SpiderMurphy: what CDWright said is true, but you won't be able to do it "exactly" like he said. if your last plank for a row is too long and you cut it off, you won't be able to just use the leftover for the first plank in your next row, because the cut edge will be on the wrong side. (you want manufactured edge to butt up against manufactured edge for a perfectly tight joint). plus, the tongue will be gone, and you won't have anything to click together!

so START the first row with a cut piece, say 1/3 length piece. then the 2nd row is started with a full piece, and the 3rd row is started with a 2/3 piece. the waste from cutting these "first" pieces can be used as "end" pieces. you kind of have to keep a pile of "firsts" and "ends". at least, that's what we did. and we didn't waste very much at all.

(no disrespect intended, Perry! i just didn't want him to be confused - since he has no directions to refer to! do you agree?)

Sounds to me like we were talking about the same thing. I just didn't word it like that :)

Ya, you have to cut your starters for the first rows, but as you get going, your starters will be what is cut off the ends. It gives a more random look.
