Doors and Windows - Replacing window in stucco exterior

I have hung a few exterior doors but have never done a window. Are there any pointers you could offer me before I take this on. The window that is in there now is a right to left slider. I am replacing it with a traditional up and down. It says its a 320 config/single nail on vent size ,white single hung aluminum. Made by Windowmaster.

The exterior of my house is stucco. Should I break up the stucco around the window? Use a sawz all to cut out old window. what will I need to do the job right basically.

I not an expert at this but have done about 50 windows. If you haven't bought your window yet, think about a retro fit. They are much easier to install no broken stucco or sheet rock. You just take out the sash in the old window leave the old frame in place and install the new one. Most stores can give you all the info you need. The secret is to measure right.
If you have the window already and it has the nail fins you have to break the stucco out about 6" remove the old frame
(just pull the nails) Put in some sealing paper, install the new window level. Then if needed nail on some metal lath and stucco. Don't put the stucco on too thick or it will check go slow about 3 coats.

Woodbutcher, I am now facing this problem...must replace an Anderson Narrowline double-hung with stucco exterior. I really don't want to remove stucco because the repair would never match. Isn't there a way to make the new window weather-tight without cutting back the stucco for the nailing fins? What if I remove the nailing fins and use some step flashing and high quailty polyurethane caulk?
