I am restoring a circa 1930 house. Is anyone familiar with retriving window weights where the rope has broken and the weight has dropped into the wall? I am assessing whether to repair exisiting windows or replace based on ease of fixing weights, and availability of parts (which I also seek information on).

There should be a panel in the side of the window frame held in with two screws usually. Once you remove the panel you will be able to retrieve the missing weight. New chains, which replace the cords, are availiable at most hardware stores.
