I have a hutch that I want to refinish. I'm sure what type of wood it is but it is very light in color. The legs and trim are painted white. I want to put a dark wood finish on it. Do I have to strip it or can I simply paint it? I have never done anything like this. I could really use some help.
Thanks

If you want to paint the piece, you can clean it well with mineral spirits and lightly scuff with a scotchbrite pad before priming with Zinsser 123 or other top quality primer, then painting the color of your choice. In the long run, better results come from stripping it first.
That really depends upon how long you intend to use the piece this way. If this is first house, first furniture, and you don't expect to keep it but a few years, painting over the old finish will do. If you intend to keep it for many years, strip it and paint it.
Hope this helps.
