My bannisters don't seem to be finished on the ends. The texture is rough, not smooth. Can they be sanded smooth? Also, they have a very dark (almost black) '70s style stain and I want to refinish them to a lighter colored stain. Will stripping remove all of the dark stain or will some of this grain show through?

You can sand the end grain smooth.
Stripping will remove the stain.
The grain will show through any stain and clear finish.
