I am looking for plans and ideas for a built in desk. I have a small "nook" area in my living room approx 7feet wide. I have browsed several plans including one that suggested laying interior doors on top of filing cabinets etc. I could use a few other ideas. The desk would be used for my computer as well as storage for bills, office supplies etc.

Thank You,

Jason

Most nook desks are a variation on the theme of a flat surface either mounted to the walls or sitting on filing cabinets or pedestals of drawers. How much you want to gain from the desk in functionality depends upon what you want to invest in the desk.

You wanted ideas, but you might try sitting with a pencil and pad and sketching in shapes and sizes and noting the purposes served by each. After brainstorming over what you want to be able to do, then sort through the ideas and make a workable whole of them. A standard door will not span 7 feet, so right away you will need some creativity. Do you want a place for a computer? A look down desk with a Monitor set down into the surface is an idea. Bill paying? Arts and crafts?

Here is an involved project.

Thank you for the reply. I have already completed my desk and it has come out quite well, if I do say so myself. It is pretty generic but functional. I ended up using 2- 2x2x8's bolted to the walls with 31/2 inch lag screws. For the top I cut a peice of 3/4 in plywood/hardwood (OAK) 29 1/2 inches deep and 7 feet 4inches long. i used several 2 inch lag screws attached from the bottom. Since the shelf is so heavy I used my 2 drawer file cabinet as a center support. I basically designed the dimensions of the desk around the file cabinet. I used a peice of shelf moulding as an accent, attached to the "lip" of the desk. . After staining and varnishing it looks suprisingly good. Thank you for your assistance.
